    American painter and printmaker Robert Motherwell was a foundational figure of Abstract Expressionism, integrating aspects of action painting, colour field painting, and European traditions of decorative abstraction into his own work. Motherwell was also one of the youngest artists associated with the New York School in the 1950s and ‘60s, a group that included Philip Guston, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko.
